WASSA Internship Program

Purpose. The WASSA Internship Program is designed to provide financial support for WASSA members who wish to spend time in another WASSA institution’s office working with a WASSA institute representative and/or his/her staff on summer session administrative matters. The Internship Program provides assistance to new summer session administrators who want to learn more about program design, implementation and management; budget and finance; marketing; staffing related issues; research; and other administrative matters affecting summer session administration. However, experienced WASSA institute colleagues are also invited to participate in this program if they wish to learn more about a particular administrative area pertinent to summer session.

Eligibility. Participation in the WASSA Internship Program is open to all members whose institutional memberships are in good standing. Institutional representatives or any other summer session staff members listed on the member institution’s roster are eligible, as long as the staff member’s application is endorsed by the WASSA institutional representative and the internship host institution.

Application. Eligible members should complete the attached WASSA Internship Program application and send it to the chair of the WASSA Professional Standards Committee by fax, electronic mail attachment, or postal mail to be received no later than one week prior to the first day of the annual meeting. The WASSA Professional Standards Committee will review all WASSA Internship Program applications at the annual meeting and the chair or his/her designee will announce the travel awards at the annual meeting awards banquet.

Program details.
This program will permit a WASSA member to visit another WASSA institution to gain experience and expertise from the host institution’s summer operations. The timing and duration of the proposed internship can be designated over any time frame within the following calendar year.

Within thirty days following the conclusion of the visit, the intern must complete the attached WASSA Internship Program report and send it to the chair of the WASSA Professional Standards Committee. The intern and a host institution representative will co-present a session about their experience at the next annual WASSA conference.

Payment of the WASSA Internship Program award will be sent after appropriate receipts documenting travel and lodging expenses associated with the internship have been received by the WASSA treasurer, and the intern’s summary report reviewed by the Professional Standards Committee.

At the discretion of the WASSA Executive Committee, no more than four awards will be given in any single calendar year, depending on the quality and potential impact of the proposed internship described in the application and the availability of funds. For each approved application, up to $500 will be awarded to pay for the internship requested. The award will be used only to defray costs of transportation between the intern’s home institution and the site of the proposed internship and the costs of lodging at the internship site. The WASSA Internship Program award cannot be used to cover other expenses, such as supplies, food, or salaries/benefits, associated with the internship.
